This piece draws inspiration from the creation myth of Malaka and Maganda, in which the first man and first woman are split in two from a stalk of a bamboo plant.
Our dancers wore M5STICKCs, and through MAX MSP, we used their acceleration and rotation data to allow choreographic interaction with the piece's audio and visual components. This piece also uses samples of bamboo, rocks and traditional Filipino and Western instruments as a backtrack and as content processed through the use of granular synthesis. The visual component is composed of layered particle systems made up of pictures taken in both the Philippines and Canada, prompted by themes of trees, roots and earth.
This piece used a 2-channel sound system. The speakers were placed downstage on each end facing the audience. This was a project for my minor in Applied Music Technology at The University of British Columbia.
